FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!
Over the last few years, we’ve seen our fair share of record-setting contracts be made – and then subsequently topped – across all sports. Sure, some of these athletes are worth that big paycheck, but we can’t say that’s true for all of them. Now, we aren’t saying these athletes aren’t good. We’re just saying that the front office doesn’t always make the most financially sound decisions.
Let’s take a look at the Los Angeles Angels. Their star player (don’t fight me on this, you KNOW he is their best player) has a contract that expires in 2020. Keep in mind, his existing contract was a six-year extension valued at $144.5M. But now, there are rumors swirling that Mike Trout and his agent are looking for a ten-year agreement, securing a home for him until his late-30s. This same deal would be for $400M, a mere $100M more than what Manny Machado will be getting from the San Diego Padres. Give us a minute to pick our jaws up off the floor after thinking of how much money that is.
What we want to know fans, are the Angels being smart or just plain selfish with all these contract rumors? Are they getting Mike Trout for a steal? Or are they just paying whatever it takes to keep fans watching their games and buying their merchandise? If it were you in the front office, would you do whatever it takes to keep your biggest star – maybe at the expense of being able to pay what it takes to lure other players who would be key to creating a winning team – if it meant keeping the fans engaged?
Power To The Fans!
